Aviation in Indonesia

Aviation in Indonesia serves as a critical means of connecting the thousands of islands throughout the archipelago. Indonesia is a sprawling archipelago comprising 17,508 islands,〔(CIA World Factbook )〕 with 922 of those permanently inhabited.〔Based on "''Seminar Nasional Penetapan Nama Pulau-pulau Kecil Dalam Presektif Sejarah'' or "National Seminar on naming smaller islands regarded from historical perspective", 16 to 18 July 2008 at Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia〕 With estimated population of over 255 million people — which is the world's fourth-most-populous country, also due to the growth of middle-class and the advent of low-cost carrier in the recent decade, Indonesia is widely regarded as an emerging market for air travel in the region. Between 2009 and 2014 the number of Indonesia's air passengers increased over 344.63% from 27,421,235 to 94,504,086.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 work=The World Bank )〕 Indonesia's aviation potential is huge, according to the estimation of International Air Transport Association (IATA), by 2034 Indonesia is expected to be the world's sixth largest market for air travel. By then some 270 million passengers are expected to fly to, from and within the country.
However, safety issues continue to be a persisting problem in Indonesian aviation. Several accidents have condemned Indonesia's air transport system as one of the least safe in the world. Indonesian aviation facing numerous challenges, including poor, outdated and often overwhelmed infrastructures, the factor of human error, to bad weathers, haze problems caused by plantation fires, and volcanic ash, spewed by numerous Indonesian volcanoes that might disrupt air transportation.
In 2015, IATA identified three potential elements to be addressed in the masterplan to develop Indonesian aviation industry: improving safety, ensuring capacity and a smart regulation framework. These efforts was meant to ensure that the country is served by an aviation industry performing at its best.〔
